Within our control at all times, we can use our energy, time, resources to focus on the following 2 aspects:

  • The science of neurochemistry based on our psychological, emotional and environment. Within our control are the ability to limit our cortisol and adrenaline that can disrupt our body’s natural functions. The inherent stressors of life can disrupt and release stress hormones well in excess. Whilst cortisol and adrenaline can be useful for getting things done, in excess can be harmful.

Allostatic Load refers to the cumulative physiological toll that chronic stress and the body's continuous adaptation to stressors take on various bodily systems. Coined by researchers McEwen and Stellar, allostatic load encompasses the wear and tear that occurs when the body responds to ongoing psychological, emotional, and environmental challenges. These stressors trigger the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, disrupting the body's natural equilibrium and affecting its ability to function optimally.

Over time, the accumulation of allostatic load can lead to negative health outcomes, including increased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular issues, diabetes, and mental health disorders. Essentially, allostatic load is a measure of how well the body can handle and recover from stress, and when this load becomes too heavy and persistent, it can result in physical, cognitive, and emotional decline.

Managing allostatic load is crucial for maintaining overall well-being and performance. Strategies such as active recovery, healthy lifestyle habits, mindfulness practices, and effective stress management techniques can help alleviate the burden of allostatic load and promote resilience in the face of life's challenges.
